Product Data Replication - PDR

E-mail Print PDF

SAP's Product Data Replication [PDR]

SAP Product Data Replication (PDR) is a little-known functionality which allows Variant Configurator users to move entire VC models from one system to another with only a few mouse clicks.

What's even better, SAP's Product Data Replication intelligently keeps track of information already sent and performs ongoing synchronization of only the differences. The underlying data transport layer is ALE, so if you already have ALE, but are currently moving your models manually, setting up PDR is a better choice.

SAP PDR itself is part of your existing R/3 license and requires the PLM extension, so the return on investment is attained almost instantaneously.  You will no longer have to worry about missing a critical change in your push from development to production and avoid escalations and fire-drills to correct such omissions. With PDR, your VC modeling team can focus more on delivering new VC products and features and spend less unproductive time in data distribution.

eSpline has implemented this solution at multiple clients and is convinced PDR is one of the best little known secrets of SAP ERP.    Typical implementation time for PDR is about 1 week, which is ideally done onsite.  Remote support is also available.  To learn more about Product Data Replication contact us about this service and enter the exciting world of SAP product data replication!   This is yet another area of expertise that eSpline offers that help you Manage your VC processes better.

Configurator Selection

E-mail Print PDF

customer_Image_BW300x200 You may have been through a selection process for software in your career. It's a difficult and time consuming process.

Even selecting appropriate vendors/suppliers to review can be a daunting task. How do you narrow down the list to the appropriate ones to review? Which are right for you? You can't just select the companies that have visited your office. Simply enter the words "Product Configurator" into one of the popular search engines. You might be surprised to find 500,000 to 1,000,000+ hits. Most of these companies you have not heard of and yes, most are not appropriate. Getting to a manageable short list is no simple task for most.

Just coordinating all the vendors and trying to get through the sales hype and defining the requirements and communicating that information to a group of people on the vendor sales team is hard. The vendor sales team frequently doesn't have experience with your complexity, your products or understand what you want, or how to solve your problem.

You'll find that it's not like an ERP Selection

Matching the software supplier's "features" to your requirements is relatively easy until you get to a CRM, sales or manufacturing configurator. No two configurator vendors or suppliers use the same terminology. It's not like selecting an ERP application where terms mean the same thing and you have heard of most of the suppliers. So in the SAP Configurator, the word characteristics means options in other applications.

Many suppliers frequently just want to show you what "nice features" they have in their product and show the "stuff" they have done that probably isn't standard in their solution yet anyway, but it looks really good. Will they provide you with a customized demonstration? Perhaps, but then what? Ask them how they built the business rules.

There are some very credible firms with some very compelling software solutions. During the past few years several configuration application companies have begun to focus on specific industries such as pumps and valves solutions, office furniture or building products. There are many others that are beginning to focus on simple configuration for retail applications. So, there are many that you should review and many that would never compete in the same market space. Let us help you focus on which applications might serve you best.

Please remember, this is an immature market and is ever-changing with new entries every year. Many claim to be unique and they have terminology to match; unique. With the exception of the ERP suppliers, the configurator suppliers are typically not larger than $10 - 20 million in annual sales revenue and most of that revenue [turnover] is implementation consulting services not software sales. There are exceptions to that. Many have been in business for 10 to 20 years and are very successful in their niche. eSpline can help you find and assess these companies.

How to make a good choice?

Making a "right choice" is yet another issue. Getting through your own company politics, setting up and managing a selection team and dealing with the personal favorites of management and the selection team members can be nightmarish.

business-trio Then, you have to manage the software suppliers, manage their sales team, and then there are the demonstrations. You don't want a standard sales demo. You need something that is relevant to your business. A scripted demo? For a half day, yes. Make sure it is current software and available in the current release. Make sure they didn't write special code to make it work for you. Hold them to a strict schedule and stop them when they begin showing you "neat stuff" that you don't need. Again, this is not as straightforward as an ERP selection process.

Your company very likely requires that multiple sources [at least 3] be reviewed prior to selection and someone else has to get involved in the negotiation process. Sales configurators, product configurators, manufacturing configurators, pricing configurators are yet another chapter in the book of locating the right solution.

Our people and partners will team with you to get a "right" solution. We have done this several times for several companies in the Global 2000 with a tested process that has led to consistent results. We lead you through a process where you get meaningful comparisons and avoid the arbitrary choice. We don't make the decision, you or your team does. We help you point to a "best solution", then it is up to your company to make the choice. The "best solution" does not always get the business.

Depending upon your needs and participation, the selection and project launch can be as short as 4 weeks. The average is 8-10 calendar weeks. That is not too much time to make a decision that will no doubt take your company in a much different direction on selling and selection of products and services.

If you only wish to get to a "short list" quickly, we can help you with that as well. If you have documented requirements, this could take 1-3 weeks out of the overall schedule.

Legacy Configurable Product Migration and Conversion Services

eSpline has helped SAP customers examine their existing home grown, legacy or third party configuration rules and defined a series of prototypes, pilots and processes allowing them to map, cleanse, harmonize, translate, and upload to an SAP VC knowledgebase.   Often this is a one-time effort.  But, it certainly can save you months and in one example years of consulting effort vs. doing it manually

•Most projects involving creation of new SAP configurable product models have existing sources of product data, and often new content must be created as well.
  • The conversion can be efficiently and safely accomplished using general techniques and specific product data.
  • Best practices and tools reduce the cost of migration and risk of introducing errors
  • Conversion of product configuration rules can be accomplished with declarative techniques.

road_to_the_mountainseSpline has developed techniques and software tools enabling semi-automatic or "annotated" conversion of legacy or 3rd party configurator solutions and then provided bulk uploads into SAP for VC and IPC customers.

  • The source of the product data has been legacy applications, paper catalogs, and personal knowledge.
  • The motivations to migrate to SAP included:  improvement of manual / paper processes, consolidation of SAP instances due e.g.. to merger/acquisitions, and reduction of costs of custom software.
•We utilize SQL to define mapping from multiple legacy sources, possibly combining with existing SAP models.  Most transformations were done without programming Want to know more... Contact Us

Goals and Potential Benefits
